How to drive safely in summer fog

On Behalf of Gemelas, Wilson, Merrill & Fritz Co LPA | Jun 11, 2019 | Car Accidents, Firm News |

When you take to the road during the summer months, you never know what type of weather conditions you’ll face. You hope that the sun is shining, and the sky is clear, but this won’t always hold true.

Foggy conditions can move into the area at any time of the day, with the early morning and late-night hours among the most common. If you find yourself navigating the road in dense fog, here are some tips to follow:

  • Leave more space: With limited visibility, you never want to drive too closely to other vehicles. The more space you leave, the more time you have to stop your vehicle.
  • Slow down: This goes along with leaving more space, as a slower pace gives you more time to make split decisions. You may have to drive below the speed limit until the fog clears up.
  • Use your headlights: Your headlights can increase visibility, while making it easier for other drivers to see your vehicle. But, don’t use your high beams, as the light can reflect back into your eyes.

It’s extremely dangerous, but some people don’t change their driving style in inclement weather. They drive the same in fog as they do when the sun is shining, and visibility is at its best.

If a negligent driver causes an accident, move to safety and call for help. You should also examine yourself for injuries, and administer first aid until paramedics arrive to assist you.

Once your health is in order, file an insurance claim and learn more about your legal rights for seeking compensation for your injuries and other damages.
