What can you do to maximize your chances at custody?

On Behalf of Gemelas, Wilson, Merrill & Fritz Co LPA | Apr 18, 2019 | Child Custody, Firm News |

Both parents involved in a divorce usually have custodial rights granted to them, but the extent of those rights are what’s in question. If you want to maximize your time with your child, then there are some things you need to do to show your abilities as a parent.

Your attorney will be familiar with the court system and judge presiding over your case, which is helpful. Here are three additional tips for getting the most out of your child custody case.

1. Dress the part

To start with, you should always dress the part in court. Arrive dressed in business or business casual clothing. Your attorney can discuss exact outfits or ways to make yourself appear respectable in court, which will help you.

2. Have witnesses

Another important step is to have witnesses who can describe the type of parent you are. Don’t only ask family members to help. Reach out to teachers, coaches and others who have seen you take part in your child’s interests and care.

3. Show a willingness to improve

If there are some negative things being said about you, it’s a good idea to show that you’re willing to take steps to improve yourself. Take a parenting class and submit the documents, or start taking a more active role in your child’s care. It’s never too late to make a positive impression on a judge.

These are three tips to help you with a custody battle. Your attorney can help you prepare, so you have the best chance of getting the custody arrangements you want.
