Just because you’re paying attention to the road doesn’t mean that other drivers are doing the same. Distracted driving remains a problem throughout the United States, with thousands of accidents, injuries and fatalities attributed to it every year.

Here are some key steps to take if you spot a distracted driver:

  • Assume that the driver doesn’t see you
  • Keep your distance to protect yourself in the event that the driver makes a sudden move
  • Call 911 to report the behavior of the driver
  • Do not take matters into your own hands

While all of these steps are important, it’s critical that you call 911 for help as opposed to taking action. If you attempt to get the driver’s attention, it could result in an accident or a road rage incident. You’re much better off leaving this up to the responding officer.

What to do after a distracted driving accident

If a distracted driver causes an accident, take these five steps:

  • Move to safety
  • Check yourself for injuries
  • Call 911 to request an ambulance and police presence
  • Receive medical treatment at a local hospital
  • Contact your insurance agent to file a claim

By taking these steps, you’re doing your part in staying on the right track. It’s not always easy to deal with the aftermath of a motor vehicle accident, but knowing what you should and shouldn’t do will put your mind at ease.

As you recover, don’t lose sight of the fact that you can seek compensation for your injuries and damages. This is better than letting the negligent driver off the hook.
