What should you do when entering a work zone when driving?

Driving through a work zone can be frustrating, but it's a way of life for all drivers. If you find yourself in this position, there are steps you can take to maintain your safety and that of those around you.

Here are three things you should always do:

  • Slow down: The best thing you can do is slow down, as this gives you more time to react to anything that happens, such as a construction worker walking in front of your vehicle.
  • Watch the traffic ahead: Things have a way of changing quickly in construction zones, so you always need to keep your eyes ahead. For example, traffic can quickly come to a halt, thus causing you to do the same.
  • Obey all road signs and flaggers: Signs and flaggers are there for a reason, so obey what you're being told. An example of this is a speed limit sign prompting you to slow down.

Along with the above, consider taking a different route if you know you'll run into a work zone. Even if it takes you out of your way, it may allow you to reach your destination sooner since you don't have to slow down.

If you're part of a work zone accident, such as if another driver strikes your vehicle from behind, make your way to the side of the road as quickly and safely as possible.

Call 911, cooperate with police and don't hesitate to seek transportation to a local hospital. After that, you can file an insurance claim and work through the many steps you need to take to determine if you're eligible to seek compensation for your damages.
