These causes of distracted driving are common

It's easy to think about distracted driving and assume it will never be a problem for you. Just the same, you may assume that other drivers are always paying attention to the road.

There are many causes of distracted driving, some of which are more common than others. The following seven are extremely common, not to mention dangerous:

  • Texting: When you're texting, you're not watching the road ahead. Also, you will only have one hand (maybe none) on the wheel.
  • Smoking: Smoking is a distraction, as it can take your attention away from the task at hand. Once again, your hands may not be on the wheel.
  • Eating or drinking: It sounds like a great way to make up time, but any time you eat or drink in the car, you have the potential to lose sight of what you're doing when it comes to driving.
  • Daydreaming: This can happen at any time of the day, regardless of how long you're behind the wheel.
  • Reaching for an item: This can include things such as a cellphone in a glove box, a toy under the seat or a drink in the cup holder.
  • Passengers: When driving with others, it's important to let them know that you need to pay attention to the road and your surroundings.
  • Adjusting vehicle controls: The radio, audio and climate settings may need adjusting at some point, but you should be careful of how and when you do this.

Any type of distracted driving is dangerous, as it can cause an accident. If another driver becomes distracted and strikes your vehicle, move to safety and call for help. Once you do this, you can receive treatment, contact your insurance company and take all the necessary steps in protecting your legal rights.
