There’s a big difference between knowing what to do after a car crash and taking action.

Fortunately, when you know which steps you need to take, there’s a greater chance that you will actually do so.

Here are five steps you don’t want to forget:

  • Check yourself and your passengers for injuries
  • Move your vehicle to safety, preferably as far away from moving traffic as possible
  • Call 911 and wait for police and an ambulance to arrive at the scene
  • Document the accident, which can include exchanging information with the other driver and taking photos
  • Receive immediate medical treatment

Some of these things are easier said than done, especially if you have suffered an injury and/or your vehicle is damaged.

For example, if you injured your neck in a car crash, you shouldn’t attempt to drive your car to the side of the road or take photos of the scene. The only thing you should worry about is getting help as soon as possible.

Once you receive treatment and begin to recover, you can contact your insurance company to discuss the accident. It’s good to do this as soon as you can, but again, your health must come first.

After speaking with your insurance company, you’ll have a clear idea of what comes next. It’s up to you to follow up with your insurer every step of the way, making sure that they live up to their end of the policy.

Also, don’t hesitate to learn more about the cause of the crash, as this can help you better understand who was at fault and how to protect your legal rights.
